Black Madonnas refer to hundreds of statues and paintings in Christian art—predominantly from the medieval period—that depict the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus with dark skin

Our Lady of Częstochowa (Poland): Housed at the Jasna Góra Monastery, this is the most famous Black Madonna in the world. The painting is traditionally attributed to St. Luke the Evangelist, though scholars date it to the Byzantine period.

Some historians suggest these depictions were intentionally created to reflect the ethnic heritage of local populations or to connect the Virgin to passages in the Song of Songs, which famously states, “I am black but beautiful”.
